Rabuor Nursery School
With the support of RVP, the Rabuor Nursery School has grown tremendously. The school was started in 2002 with a group of 25 children in a small borrowed space belonging to the church. Now the school is an important source of education, emotional support, nutrition, and routine health care for close to 150 children in Rabuor, many of whom have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS.
During 2004, a new nursery school building was constructed and equipped with chairs, tables, teacher's desks and blackboards. In 2005, with the help of generous donations from Seattle's University Congregational United Church of Christ, a second classroom was added and the teacher's office space was expanded. A donation from Slum Doctors of Bellingham, WA funded the enlargement of the kitchen and the purchase of a new stove.
Today, the building houses two classrooms, a fully equipped kitchen with three stoves, an office for teachers, and the village pharmacy. The nursery school staff includes three trained, full-time teachers, two cooks, teacher's aids, and a guard (see team), who lovingly look after the children five days a week. RVP also provides school uniforms and shoes for all of the students and sponsors a
daily nutritious hot lunch.
The school consists of three classes: baby, middle, and final. To accommodate the growing number of students, RVP is now planning to construct a third classroom so that each class will have its own classroom. Subjects being taught include math, language, environmental, drawing, music, and outdoor education. Local primary schools that have received graduates of Rabuor Nursery School continually remark on how well prepared the Rabuor students are. In this way, the school is serving as a vital link between disadvantaged students and the free primary education system. Without the skills they acquire during their time at the nursery school, most of these students would be denied admission into primary school. Secondary School Scholarships
As of Winter/Spring 2006, sixteen high school students from Rabuor, six of whom are girls, have received RVP scholarships that cover the full cost of a first-rate high school education. Scholarships cover the costs of tuition (only primary education is provided for free by the Kenyan government) as well as books, room and board. These scholarships are made possible by the generous support of private donors. To learn how you can support a deserving student, see the "secondary circle" giving option on the Get Involved page of this site.
